SimplePractice alternatives worth a look

SimplePractice raised Starter from $29 to $49 a month in 2025. If you’re reconsidering, here are six alternatives with current prices, what each does well and where each falls short.

The short answer

For the lowest cost: PracticeLite (free for up to 5 clients, $19/month unlimited) or TheraNest Essentials ($29 per therapist). For heavy insurance billing in a therapy practice: TherapyNotes. For multi-discipline clinics: Jane. For dietitians and wellness programs: Healthie or Practice Better.

SimplePractice itself is still a strong product, with a large ecosystem and a client-facing directory. If you rely on features it has and others don’t, the price may be worth it.

How we compared

We make PracticeLite, so read this list knowing that. We’ve tried to be useful anyway: every tool below is a reasonable choice for someone, prices come from each vendor’s own pricing page, and each entry lists real strengths and real drawbacks, ours included. We looked at:

  • Monthly cost for a solo clinician, and for a group of three.
  • Whether you can bill insurance from inside the app, and what it costs.
  • Everyday essentials: scheduling, reminders, notes, intake, a client portal and telehealth.
  • How easy it is to move your client list over from SimplePractice.

1. PracticeLite

Best for solo practitioners and small groups who want the essentials at a low, flat price

Pricing: Free for 1 practitioner and up to 5 active clients. Practice is $19/month (unlimited clients, SMS reminders). Practice Pro is $39/month with $29/month per extra practitioner. Insurance billing is a $19/month add-on.

Strengths

  • The lowest price on this list for unlimited clients.
  • Imports SimplePractice’s client export as is.
  • Medi-Cal and Kaiser billing for doulas, with doula rules checked before you send.
  • Group tools: care teams, client privacy, a shared request page, coverage and practitioner earnings.

Watch out for

  • A younger product with a smaller feature set than SimplePractice: no AI note-taker, ePrescribing or group sessions yet.
  • The mobile app is iPhone only for now.
  • No client-facing therapist directory.
